Dear Mr. Schlesinger:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop MUSC 171 (F 2017), MUTH 111 and MUSC 289 (W 2018) past the academic deadline and receive Aegrotat standing in FILM 110 and PHIL 115 (FW 2017/18). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I will grant your request to drop MUSC 171, MATH 111 and MUSC 289 late. I will also grant your request to receive Aegrotat standing in PHIL 115. Your final grade in this class will appear on your transcript as C- along with the notation €œAegrotat: Estimated Grade€.
2. I must unfortunately deny your request to receive Aegrotat standing in FILM 110.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all of the work of the course.€ The instructor(s) involved must also confirm that the student has demonstrated a clear understanding of the course material.
While your appeal does describe some circumstances that are extenuating in nature and there is supporting documentation to confirm them, your instructor confirmed that you did not meet the learning outcomes for FILM 110 to warrant granting a pro-rated final grade. You failed both assignments (in term one and term two), failed term one test (6.38/15) and barely passed term two test (8.55/15). You did not submit an essay or a review.
Please note that the appeals system is not designed to compensate for chronic conditions that are ongoing in nature. Students in this situation are expected to register with Accessibility Services to receive the academic accommodations they need and if the extenuating circumstances continue to affect their course work, they must pause at Week 7 each term to realistically appraise their participation in class, readings, assignment and group work and if they are not able to keep up, they must drop courses as needed by the Week 8 deadlines. Appeals to change grades after the fact (once grades are posted) are typically only granted in cases when a student experiences a new or acute problem after Week 8 and it is well documented. Moving forward, you must ensure that you register with Accessibility Services, work with your Accessibility Advisor and drop classes as needed within the deadlines.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
