Dear Ms. Montgomery:
I have carefully considered your appeal to add MATH 121 late (S 2018) as well as drop CHEM 213 (F 2015), MATH 121 (FW 2016/17) and CHEM 223 (W 2017) and receive Credit standing in CHEM 222 (W 2016), CHEM 213, CHEM 311 (F 2017) and WRIT 125 (W 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I must deny your request to add MATH 121 late. We were unable to hear this appeal until your requirement to withdraw appeal was heard first. Once your grade in CHEM 112 was updated your academic record was reassessed and the requirement to withdraw ruling was removed. I understand that this process took some time but it is now Week 9 of a condensed 12 week term so it is far too late to begin the course at this point in time. MATH 121 will be offered online again in the fall/winter 2018/19 year and you may register for it during the registration period this summer.
2. I must also deny your request for the late course drops and Credit standing for the classes listed above. Your file shows a history of chronic health problems that have spanned over your entire university career at Queen€™s. In cases such as these, students are expected to register with Accessibility Services to receive the academic accommodations they require and take proactive measures of monitoring their progress in classes carefully and making decisions to drop classes within the Week 8 deadlines if they are not able to keep up with their workload. The appeal system is designed to be used in cases where acute problems arise after the drop deadlines. Unfortunately, your appeal did not demonstrate that you have taken these measures as there is no evidence supplied to show that you registered with Accessibility Services or that you were not able to make decisions to drop classes within the deadlines. In fact, your file shows that your professors in several of your classes provided quite generous accommodations on several occasions. Furthermore, there is no documentation supplied from a healthcare provider to confirm the full timeline and severity of your extenuating circumstances, or speak to the impact they had on these specific classes you are asking to appeal. Lastly, in regards receiving Credit standing, there is no evidence supplied to confirm that you would have performed significantly better in these classes under any different circumstances. Your pattern of grades on your transcript shows your Chemistry grades to be fairly consistent from year to year. To change a large number of grades on a transcript is a significant action and without proper documentation, I cannot justify allowing such a request.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
