Dear Ms. Anderson:

I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in SPAN 111 (F 2016) and ECON 110 (FW 2016-17). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:

1. To grant your request for Credit in ECON 110 based on your extenuating circumstances which are documented by Student Wellness Services from January 2017. Your grade in this course will appear as a CR on your transcript.

2. To deny your request to receive Credit in SPAN 111. Your letter states that due to your anxiety you were unable to participate fully in that course however the information we received from your instructor advised that you received a very good grade in the role-play exercise and that your participation in the course was satisfactory. Further, your documentation does not address the Fall term 2016.

If you wish to appeal this decision you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent. Guidelines for appealing to the Board of Studies and the appeal form can be found at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€) Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact Mr. Harry Smith, Office of the Ombudsman for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative. His office is located in room 421 Robert Sutherland Hall and he can be reached by phone (533-6495) or e-mail (ombuds@queensu.ca).

I am pleased to read that you plan to continue to work with your family doctor and Student Wellness Services to ensure your make continued progress regarding your mental health. I must warn you however that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage ongoing problems and is designed for students who encounter problems, or whose problems become acute, after the drop deadline. I would encourage you to consider taking a lighter course load and to evaluate the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term and to drop courses if necessary at that time.

Sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
