Dear Ms. Fontaine:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat standing in ENGL 100 (FW 2017-18). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your instructor indicates that you missed almost 50 of the Winter term classes, i.e. 25 of the entire course. Further, you did not submit the final essay or contribute to the final seminars, all of which are essential components of the class, designed to demonstrate the bringing together of the course learning outcomes. This is a foundational English course and it is essential for students to demonstrate that every learning objective is met. Without meeting all of these learning outcomes, a student cannot fare well in second year ENGL courses. Therefore, given the lack of evidence that you have effectively met all of the required learning outcomes for this course, I cannot justify granting an Aegrotat grade in this case.
