Dear Ms. Kennedy:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop CLST 102 (Fall 2017) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
While I understand that you have a documented learning disability, this in and of itself is not considered to be an extenuating circumstance that would warrant the retroactive drop of a class. Students with accessibility needs are expected to register with Accessibility Services (QSAS) and communicate with instructors to ensure that their accommodations are properly in place. When this is not possible, students must communicate with their QSAS advisor and seek help when needed. Choosing not to follow through with this process was a judgement call you made at the time, not a circumstance beyond your personal control. However, I do agree that having a lung infection is certainly a circumstance outside of your control that would have had an impact on your academic studies. Unfortunately there is no documentation supplied to confirm the timeline and severity of your condition, nor to confirm the impact to which your condition affected your work in this class. Without such documentation I am not able to grant your request.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
