Dear Mr. Tuerling:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop CISC 102 (S 2018) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
While I understand that you have a documented learning disability, this in itself is not considered to be an extenuating circumstance that would warrant the retroactive drop of a class. Students with accessibility needs are expected to register with Accessibility Services (QSAS) and communicate with instructors to ensure that their accommodations are properly in place. Choosing not to follow through with this process was a judgement call you made at the time, not a circumstance beyond your personal control.
I commend you for recognizing that it is in your best interest to seek the support you require through accommodations which are now being arranged with QSAS. I encourage you to reach out for any additional help from an Academic Advisor if you require additional help in the future.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
