Dear Ms. Thackray:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop SOCY 210 (F 2018) late. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
While your appeal does describe circumstances that are extenuating in nature, the documentation provided does not present a direct link relating to the severity and impact those circumstances had on your grade in this particular course or that you would have performed significantly better in the course under any different circumstances. The drop deadline is set at Week 8 to allow students plenty of time to assess their progress in a class and withdraw without academic penalty if they feel that they cannot keep up with the demands or have the academic background needed to successfully complete it. The appeal system is not designed to allow students to ask to have low grades altered after the fact.
I am pleased that you will be receiving treatment from your physician and going forward, I encourage you evaluate the impact of your health and life circumstances on your studies prior to week 8 of term.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
