I have carefully considered your appeal to drop SOCY 363 (F 2018) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your file shows that you have submitted four requests for Consideration since the beginning of this year due to your health issues and that modifications were made in an effort to aid you in the completion of your courses, including SOCY 363. I noted that your documentation supports and recommends that you be granted an Incomplete grade in this course, thus allowing you time to complete the outstanding course work at a later date. I support this recommendation. I encourage you to contact your instructor and make arrangements to finish the remaining work in SOCY 363.
The appeals system is not designed to compensate for ongoing health issues; instead it is intended for situations where students experience an unforeseen acute or new situation that arises after the drop deadline in Week 8. Your first request for Academic Consideration was made on September 27th and again on October 23rd which was well before the November 2nd drop deadline. Prior to week 8 of the term, a student should realistically assess the impact their health is having on their course work and drop courses accordingly.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
