Dear Mr. Yan:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in ECON 241 (F 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€ Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
I am certainly sympathetic to your situation and realize that this is a disappointing decision, however the circumstances you report Kai do not warrant the changing of this grade to CR. You may want to consider retaking this course since the policy regarding repeats is such that the low grade would be excluded from your GPA and the higher grade would be included in your GPA. I realize that as an international student, this option does present a significant expense but if the D grade is disconcerting, the repeating of this course is an option.
I might also suggest that you consider the fact that one or two lower grades on a transcript may not be as detrimental to your future options as you might think and that you can certainly highlight to a graduate program, if that is your goal, the challenges you faced with that particular course.
