Dear Furohaar Furoghudin:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the challenges you faced during the Fall term 2018 and have carefully considered your appeal to drop SOCY 275 past the academic deadline and receive an extension of an Incomplete grade in SOCY 210 (F 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal outlines that in mid-November you found out that your grandmother fell ill and your grades were impacted by your visits with her and the stress you felt due to that circumstance. The information we have received from your instructor in SOCY 210 however suggests that you had a number of not completed assignments prior to November. This information is evidence that the event of your grandmother€™s illness did not necessarily impact your studies. In addition, this instructor advised that she reached out to you in January to schedule the deferred exam and you advised her that you had decided to appeal to drop this course.
With regards to your request to drop SOCY 275, the circumstances outlined do not support your appeal for a late drop of this course as there was no reason given as to why this course was impacted by your circumstance more so than your LAW 201 or SOCY 226 courses which you were successful in.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Furohaar, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
