Dear Kenza Bathily:
I was sorry to read of the difficulties you experienced with your living arrangements during 2018 which no doubt impacted your studies to some degree. I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in MICR 221 (W 2018), PHGY 214 (FW 2017-18) and MICR 360 (F 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower€. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling reasons indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
While your letter of appeal reports that your circumstances impacted your health, it fails to offer a compelling argument as to why your extenuating circumstances affected these courses more so than your other courses. In addition, the grades received in these challenging courses, particularly during Winter term 2018, are not significantly out of line with your other course grades which were completed that term.
This is a difficult learning experience Kenza but one that will be valuable as you proceed with the pursuit of your university degree. The long term impact of lower grade should not weigh particularly heavy when, and if, you apply to a graduate program and certainly a student can repeat a course with a low grade. The higher grade would then be included in your GPA and the lower grade excluded from your GPA.
