Dear Sonya Patel:

I was sorry to read that you have been dealing with a cyclically occurring condition which particularly impacted your academic studies during the Winter and Summer terms 2018. After carefully considering your appeal to drop ECON 243, STAT 263 (W 2018) and COMM 200, COMM 231 (S 2018) past the academic deadline, I have decided to grant your request based on the circumstances outlined as well as your documentation.

I have exercised significant leniency in this decision since you were urged in the letter dated July 11, 2018 from Associate Dean Johanne Benard to register with QSAS. You were also advised that you were to evaluate your course work during week 7 and 8 of the term and drop courses that you had fallen behind in. I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances and the compelling documentation received from Dr. Khanna but need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition. An appeal based on the same circumstances may not be granted in the future. I encourage you once again to register with QSAS and work with an accommodation advisor to manage your academics. This could include taking a lighter course load and would include, as mentioned previously, evaluating the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the €œImportant Dates€ section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
