Dear Arian Sattari Khavas:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop BIOL 103 (W 2019) past the academic deadline and realize that your circumstances may have made completing this course successfully somewhat of a challenge. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
While your appeal does describe circumstances that are extenuating in nature and the documentation you have supplied does indicate that there were medication issues which affected your academic functioning during winter term, there is no clear indication as to why your health condition impacted your grades in this particular course more so than your other courses. You mention that the lab in BIOL 103 was difficult due to being unable to stay focused but there is no clear evidence which supports the reason why it would be more difficult for you to stay focused in that science related course more so than your other courses.
Going forward, I encourage you to pause and evaluate your progress in your course by week 7 of the term and if you have fallen behind or are having difficulties with the course content, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop date deadline.
I am sure this is a disappointment decision Arian but let me remind you of the repeat policy. If a student repeats a course that they earned a lower grade in, the higher grade earned on the repeated course will be include in the GPA and the lower grade will be excluded from the GPA.
