Dear Chris Grady:
I read with interest the challenges you experienced during 2018 and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop CISC 124, ECON 212 (W 2018), POLS 110 (FW 2017/18) and COMM 251, ECON 212 (S 2018) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I will grant your request to drop COMM 251 and ECON 212 (S 2018). The documentation provided supports circumstances experienced during that term specifically.
2. I will deny your request to drop CISC 124, ECON 212 (W 2018), POLS 110 (FW 2017/18) past the academic deadline. As noted above, the documentation you have submitted supports the Summer term specifically and I cannot therefore justify altering your transcript after the fact to drop your Winter term courses. I am however willing to review this decision if you are able to successfully provide documentation that speaks to your extenuating circumstances during Winter term 2018 and addresses the severity of those circumstances and the impact they had on your studies during that term.
If you wish to submit additional documentation for my review, please submit that to asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter.
Chris, you may be aware of the progression rules regarding Academic Probation but let me remind you that if your GPA does not reach 1.6 when we review your transcript in May 2020, you will be required to withdraw for one year. As you know, a good strategy to help you meet that target GPA is to repeat courses which you failed or earned a low grade in. If a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which means there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA. This is considered a wise strategy to ensure you are able to raise your GPA to 1.6 at the next point of progression evaluation.
Going forward, I strongly suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of the term and if you have fallen behind in your course work, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop date deadline.
