Dear Ms. Oxley:
I have carefully considered your appeal to add MATH 124 (W 2015) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s ability to add a course within the deadline was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload. In the absence of extenuating circumstances, beyond your control, which would have prevented you from meeting the add deadline as published in the Arts and Science Calendar, I can not reasonably waive the Faculty Regulation.
This course is not required for your Degree Plan and given your current academic standing, I am not convinced that it is in your best academic interests to start a course this late into the term and risk earning another low or failing grade. Your GPA is currently at 1.43, which is lower than the 1.60 minimum threshold required to remain good academic standing. Therefore, you will need to earn strong grades from this point forward to avoid being placed on academic probation.
I would also like to caution you at this time that according to the Admission Regulations, students are not permitted to be registered in two different educational institutions at the same time. If you intend on pursuing a program through St. Lawrence College, I would advise you to discontinue your registration at Queen€™s. Alternatively, if you plan on completing your degree program at Queen€™s you should discontinue your registration at St. Lawrence until you have graduated. Attending two institutions simultaneously could jeopardize your admission status and well as potentially jeopardize the terms and conditions of any financial assistance you may be receiving to assist with your education costs.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
