Dear Reuben Fleming:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you report you experienced PSYC 370 (W 2019) and I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in that course. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€ Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
While your letter of appeal reports that you found the course requirements advanced, you did made the decision to remain in the course. I realize you feel that having the flu may have impeded the outcome of the midterm, that grade was still a good indicator of your potential success in the course. Additionally, the information we have received from the Instructor advises that the actual grade earned was an F, but she increased the final grades for all students by 2 and in your case, slightly more than that so that you could pass the course.
It is my experience that the long term impact of lower grade should not weigh particularly heavy when, and if, you apply to a graduate program and certainly a student can repeat a course with a low grade. The higher grade would then be included in your GPA and the lower grade excluded from your GPA.
