Dear Maria Bingie Xu:

I was sorry to read of the difficult challenges you have faced as you have pursued your undergraduate degree and I have reviewed your appeal to drop HIST 206 (F 2016), HIST 447 (F 2017), HIST 499 (W 2018), HIST 400-3, HIST 400-4 (W 2019), as well as change the grades you received in HIST 318 (FW 2015/16), LING 340 (W 2016) and LING 330 (F 2017) to Aegrotat standing. You have also appeal to extend the Incomplete grades in LING 350 and HIST 439 (F 2018). After careful consideration of the documentation you submitted and the information supplied by the instructors about the circumstances surrounding these courses, I have decided the following:

1. To grant your appeal to drop HIST 206 (F 2016), HIST 447 (F 2017), HIST 499 (W 2018), HIST 400-3, HIST 400-4 (W 2019).

2. To grant your request for Aegrotat standing in HIST 318 (FW 2015/16), LING 340 (W 2016), LING 330 (F 2017). The instructors have submitted a replacement grade based on the work you have completed as follows:

HIST 318 (FW 2015/16) will appear on your transcript with a grade of A along with the notation €œAegrotat: estimated grade€.

LING 340 (W 2016) will appear on your transcript with a grade of A along with the notation €œAegrotat: estimated grade€.

LING 330 (F 2017) will appear on your transcript with a grade of A+ along with the notation €œAegrotat: estimated grade€.

3. To deny your request to extend the Incomplete grade in LING 350 and HIST 439 (F 2018) due to the time period which has lapsed since your IN was originally granted in these courses. I am however willing to grant you Aegrorat standing in LING 350 with a grade of B- and drop HIST 439 late. If you wish to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
I am confident that you will continue to work with your health related supports and to carefully evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of the term and drop courses by week 8 if you have fallen behind or if your health related circumstances are impacting your studies. The appeal process is not meant to manage a chronic condition but is designed to assist students who have developed circumstances after the drop deadlines. These deadlines have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students providing them with the opportunity to evaluate their progress and make informed decisions regarding dropping courses when life circumstances affect their studies.
