Dear Niall McConnell:
I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the 21 day or one term deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request as well waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year€. You may resume your studies at Queen's University as of Winter term 2020 however I will restrict you to registering in 3 courses during that upcoming term, as per your academic plan presented.
Given your circumstances, I am also willing to consider granting you Credit standing in DEVS 100, ECON 110 (FW 2017/18) and GEOL 106 (W 2018) as well as Drop LING 100 (FW 2017/18) and (FW 2018/19), ENIN 140 (W 2018), ECON 290, GEOL 200 (F 2018) and GNDS 125, LAW 201, PHYS P20 (W 2019) based on the difficulties you have outlined as well as the documentation submitted. For your information, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all the work of the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€
If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision. We will then contact your instructors for which Credit standing is an option to seek their input regarding your participation in the courses.
As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider:
€¢ Choose courses carefully. Achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA. This course of action will help to ensure you will be in good academic standing and not at risk of being required to withdraw for three years.
€¢ Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right plan for your interests and aptitudes
€¢ Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 613-533-2470) or through your plan department.
€¢ The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
€¢ The Student Wellness Services Centre located in Mitchell Hall offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
€¢ Register with QSAS to arrange accommodations which can help assist you with your academic needs and in managing a chronic condition.
Going forward, you should be attentive to your progress and assess whether you are actively engaged and attending classes, completing your readings and assignments. If not, you should drop any courses in which you have fallen behind in by the end of week 8 (the drop deadline). Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter extenuating circumstances after week 8 and further appeals based on these same circumstances will likely not be granted in the future.
I wish you the best of luck as you resume your studies.
Yours sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
