Dear Emma Bullock:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal of the passing of your grandfather and have carefully considered your appeal to drop PSYC 370 past the academic deadline based on that difficult circumstance. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal letter and documentation show that your grandfather had been ill for a period of time before his passing in early October. His passing took place well before the November 1st drop date and if you were finding that your grades were impacted due to that difficult circumstance, you should have dropped this course by the drop date. You also indicate that your performance in this course may be impacted due to your decision to work two jobs. Unfortunately, that is not considered an extenuating circumstance.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Emma, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
Going forward, I strongly suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term. If you have fallen behind in your studies due to your health or other extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date.
