Dear Margarita Liubetskaya:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the challenges you faced in SPAN 111 (F 2019) after adding it to your schedule and have carefully considered your appeal to drop this course past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal and documentation indicate that the onset of your symptoms began in late September which was well before the November 1st drop date. If you were falling behind or if your extenuating circumstances were impacting your studies, you had the opportunity to drop this course by the drop deadline date. In addition, you mention that you enrolled in this course extremely late however you registered prior to the last date to add a course and this add date is set by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure that a student is able to feasibly catch up in a course. If the student is unable to do so, they should drop the course by the deadline date.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Margarita, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.

Going forward, I strongly suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term. If you have fallen behind in your studies due to your health or other extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date.
