Dear Nathaniel Zoulina:
I am sorry to have read of the challenges you experienced during Winter term and I can see that your commitment to your family is of prime importance. I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat Standing in MUSC 491 (W 2020) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your instructor noted that you have demonstrated some excellent work but have not completed the key component of the course, which is to write an original paper worth 30 and to provide feedback on another student's paper worth 10. That final paper does make up a large component of the course. The seminar sessions are designed to lead towards the writing of this paper, and provide skills in identifying sources and how to critically engage with and synthesise information Therefore, it is difficult to ascertain whether the learning outcomes in this course have been met so granting AG standing without completing these components is not a viable appeal option.
However, your instructor advised that he is more than willing to grant you an INCOMPLETE grade in this course and allow you to submit your final paper. I encourage you to reach out to Professor Bryan to make arrangements for that option.
Going forward, I suggest that you carefully evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term and if you are struggling in your courses or if your health is suffering, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.
