After carefully considering your appeal to investigate the calculation of your final grade in PSYC 203 (W 2020), and reviewing both the syllabus for this course and the Policy of Grading, I have decided to grant your request.
The initial grading of the Final Proposal (worth 25 of the final grade) was a 80. This grade was arrived at by assessing the value of the assignment using points or a numerical value 20/25 as shown in onQ. This 80 was used to calculate the final grade for PSYC 302 resulting in 84.3225 which was converted to a letter grade of A-. However, the syllabus for PSYC 302 states that the Final Proposal will be assigned a letter grade. Specifically, the syllabus states, €œYour final proposal will be a five-page, double-spaced proposal, which will be graded by similar but more detailed criteria (rubric will be posted on onQ) but the TAs will apply letter grades.€ I appreciate that this is not what in fact happened.
I also appreciate that it was not the professor€™s intention to grade the Final Proposal differently than the first two proposals; however, my interpretation of the syllabus indicates that students were to expect letter grades for this assignment. And so, a numerical assessment of 20/25 applied as a letter grade is A-. Then according to the Faculty of Arts and Science grading policy, letter grades are to be converted to numerical values for the calculation of the final grade. Thus A- becomes 82. When included in the final grade calculation, the revised grade for PSYC 302 is 84.8225. This grade of 84.8225 is still an A-; however, it was the practice of Professor Hollenstein in Winter 2020 in this course to round up and this grade rounded becomes 85 and a letter grade of A.
As a result of this appeal decision, your final grade for PSYC 203 (W 2020) will be changed to a grade of A.
