CORRECTED LETTER
Dear Kathleen Nower:
I was sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the difficult circumstances you outlined and have reviewed your request to drop late ENGL 272, WRIT 195 (F 2013); COMM 251, ENGL 231, ENGL 237 and ENGL 290 (W 2014); ENGL 259, WRIT 125, HIST 252 (Winter 2016); PHAR 100, ENGL 200, ENGL 281, WRIT 125 (Summer 2016); and FRST 290, FREN 107, ENGL 237 (Winter 2017) or to, at least, consider your request to return to your studies after having completed the Required to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years€ timeframe. Based on your extenuating circumstances and documentation, I will grant your request to drop late ENGL 272, WRIT 195 (F 2013); COMM 251, ENGL 231, ENGL 237 and ENGL 290 (W 2014); ENGL 259, WRIT 125, HIST 252 (Winter 2016); PHAR 100, ENGL 200, ENGL 281, WRIT 125 (Summer 2016); and FRST 290, FREN 107, ENGL 237 (Winter 2017). The dropping of these courses will remove the Requirement to Withdraw from your transcript. You may resume your studies at Queen's University beginning the Winter term 2021.
In order to reactivate your student file, you must complete a €œReturn to Studies€ form: https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/sites/default/files/return_to_studies.pdf and return it to our office as soon as possible. Please ensure you indicate your desired Degree Program and Plan (concentration). Once our office has received departmental approval of your Degree Plan, your file will be reactivated. For information on registration and course selection, please see: www.queensu.ca/artsci and click on €œUndergrad Students€. For information on tuition payment and accessing SOLUS (Queen's on-line student system), please see: www.queensu.ca/registrar or contact the Registrar's office at (613) 533-2040. Please be advised that Academic Regulation 13 currently states that at the end of each Winter Term in which a student has attempted 18.0 or more units since the time of their previous assessment, that student is assessed for academic progression. If, at the time of this assessment, the GPA is below 1.60 an academic sanction is triggered.
As part of your return to studies, I encourage you to take advantage of the many services available including the Learning Commons which have helpful resources, even while students are working on courses remotely. They provide a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Student Wellness Services also offers personal counselling free of charge to all Queen's students as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
Going forward, I encourage you to pause and evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term, and if you have fallen behind in your courses, or are struggling with extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop date deadline date. Typically, the granting of an appeal is based on circumstances that happened after the week 8 drop date deadline.
In returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan.
I commend you for returning to your studies and having a sound academic plan which will lead you to the successful completion of your university degree.
Yours sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
