Dear Dariya Mackay:

I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the challenges related to a concussion which you faced during the Fall term 2020 and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop PHGY 215 (F 2020) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request. You also asked to drop PSYC 100, but that is a full year course and you can drop that course on SOLUS. An appeal to drop that full year course is not necessary.

I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances but need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition. I see that you have connected with QSAS and I encourage you to work with your health care team and QSAS who can help you manage both your health and your academics. Going forward, you should pause and evaluate the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term. The week 8 drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the €œImportant Dates€ section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Best of luck in your continued recovery.

Yours sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
