Dear Dareen Malkawi:

I was sorry to read of the circumstances you outlined in your letter of appeal. I am sure it has been difficult to manage your academics as well as offer support to your family and I understand that this acute situation may have exacerbated your mental health. I will therefore grant your appeal to drop CLST 200, CLST 205 and HIST 296 (F 2020) past the academic deadline based on those challenges.

I encourage you to continue to work with your health care providers and support network who can help you manage both your health and academics.

Going forward, I encourage you to pause and evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term and if you have been unable to keep up with the course requirements or feel that dropping a course is in your best interest, you should do so by the week 8 drop date deadline. The appeal process is not designed to manage a chronic condition but is meant for students who experience an extenuating circumstance after the drop date deadline.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Yours sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
