I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined and understand that these were difficult circumstances to deal with. I have carefully considered your appeal to drop EMPR 200, EMPR 240 (W 2019), EMPR 220 (F 2019) and POLS 212, POLS 347 (S 2020) after the drop date deadline and to receive Aegrotat Standing in POLS 486 (S 2020). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your appeal to drop EMPR 200, EMPR 240 (W 2019) and EMPR 220 (F 2019). I recognize that the circumstances that you outlined inhibited your academic success during those terms and you have submitted documentation to support those timelines.
2. To deny your request to drop POLS 212, POLS 347 (S 2020) after the drop date deadline and to receive Aegrotat Standing in POLS 486 (S 2020). As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances€. Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Unfortunately, the documentation you presented does not include the Summer term 2020. In addition, you were enrolled in five courses during Summer term 2020 and the recommended summer term course load is two. I cannot therefore in good conscience alter your academic record for that term.
I have noticed that you are once again registered in an excessive course load for summer term 2021 and I encourage you to carefully evaluate that course load and drop courses by the drop date deadline if you are unable to manage that excessive course load due to health related or personal circumstances.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must do so within 21 days of receiving this letter.
