Dear Edward Zhang:

I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal that you had a difficult year and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop CISC 223 (F 2020) and CISC 235, CISC 332, CISC 360 (W 2021) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.

I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances but need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition. An appeal based on the same circumstances may not be granted in the future.

Going forward, you will be responsible for managing the impact of your condition on your academic proactively and not after the fact via the appeal process. I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses during week 7of each term and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the course to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop date deadline. Please do not wait until you receive your grades and then request a drop for those that are failures.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by Week 8 is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class. Here is the link for information about that process:

Edward, I strongly encourage you continue to work with a health professional and to proactively manage the impact of your condition on your academics. If this is a chronic condition, please talk to your counsellor about the possibility of registering with QSAS. A QSAS Advisor can help put into place appropriate accommodations to help with both your health and academics.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Best of luck in your degree progression.

Sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
