Dear Mr. Drohan:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat standing in PHIL 250B, PHIL 257B and ENGL 100B (W 2015). After reviewing your file I will grant your request for PHIL 250 and PHIL 257 but I must unfortunately deny your request for ENGL 100.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.2.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all of the work of the course.€ The Appeal Regulations go on to stress that Aegrotat standing will only be granted under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond her control.
While your appeal does certainly describe some circumstances that are extenuating in nature and there is supporting documentation to confirm them, you have not completed enough work in ENGL 100 to be eligible for Aegrotat standing. Professor Morrison confirmed that you have completed 50 per cent of the required work. A minimum of 60 per cent of the course must be completed to be eligible for Aegrotat standing. However, given your circumstances I would be willing to allow you to drop ENGL 100 past the academic deadline instead. If you wish to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision letter to confirm your request. Once it has been received we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript. Otherwise, you may ask Professor Morrison for an extension on your incomplete work to allow you time over the summer to complete this course.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
