Dear Savannah-Cheyenne Bain:
I was sorry to read of the circumstances you outlined in your letter of appeal, no doubt this has been a difficult time for you and based on that circumstance, your documentation, and support from your instructor, I will grant your appeal to drop GRMN 101 (F 2021) past the academic deadline.
I encourage you to follow through with your plan to connect with our SASS team, and to meet with a therapist when you return home for the break. I also encourage you to meet with a counsellor at Student Wellness Services in the new year who may be able to support you during this difficult time. If your circumstances require ongoing accommodations, you may want to register with QSAS who can help support both your health and academics by putting in place appropriate accommodations so you can meet your course work requirements.
Going forward, a good practise for all students is to carefully evaluate their progress in courses prior to week 7 and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding.
