Appeal Number: 9224
Decision Date: June 16, 2022
Associate Dean: Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Student Name: Sarah Welch
Student Email: 17sew2@queensu.ca
Dear Sarah:
I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.
Given your circumstances, I am also willing to drop FILM 225 (F 2021) and SOCY 235 (W 2022) and grant you Credit standing in SOCY 352 (F 2021), SOCY 309, RELS 322 (W 2022). Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all the work of the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.?
If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision and we will amend your transcript by submitting grade changes to the Registrar??s Office.
As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider:
?? Choose courses carefully. Achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA. This course of action will help to ensure you will be in good academic standing and not at risk of being required to withdraw for three years.
?? Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right plan for your interests and aptitudes?
?? Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. Academic counselling is available through your Plan department, or you can book an appointment with an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office. Appointments can be booked through the ?youcanbookme?? services at: https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergrad-students/student-services/academic-advising/appointment-booking
?? The Student Academic Success Service (https://sass.queensu.ca/) also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
?? The Student Wellness Services Centre located in Mitchell Hall offers confidential personal counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
?? A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Going forward, you should be attentive to your progress and assess whether you are actively engaged and attending classes, completing your readings and assignments. If not, you should drop any courses in which you have fallen behind in by the end of week 8 (the drop deadline). Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter extenuating circumstances after week 8.
Please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance.
Yours sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
