Decision Letter

Appeal Number: 9442
Decision Date: August 15, 2022
Associate Dean: Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Student Name: Aidan SImpson
Student Email: 20ams13@queensu.ca

Dear Aidan:

I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the 21-day appeal deadline. After reviewing your appeal, I must unfortunately deny your request.

As you know, the academic requirements in the Faculty of Arts and Science are clearly outlined in the Academic Regulation section of the Calendar and were clearly outlined in the Requirement to Withdraw for One Year letter you received. The requirement to appeal that ruling within 21 days is in place to ensure fair decision making and provide the student with an opportunity to collect relevant information for their appeal.

Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. That the Athletic Services Manager went on Maternity Leave early is not considered an extenuating circumstance since it is the student??s responsibility to meet deadlines. Additionally, you may recall that in May 2021 an appeal was granted to drop courses late since your documentation noted that you needed an IEP which would provide you with extra time on course deliverables. The documentation dated August 2022, which is relevant to this appeal, is the same and demonstrates that you have not proceeded with an IEP as recommended last year.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean??s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on ??Board of Studies?). You may contact the Office of the University Ombudsperson for information about student rights and responsibilities https://www.queensu.ca/ombuds/appeal-process/procedural-fairness and guidance on policy and procedure by visiting their website at https://www.queensu.ca/ombuds/.

Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policyE and Rules of Procedure for USAB https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy/usab-rules-of-procedure are Queen??s university Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.??

Yours sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
