Dear Paul:
I was sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the difficult circumstances you outlined and have reviewed your request to waive the Requirement to Withdraw for One year?. Based on your formal diagnosis in November that you present with ADHD, I will drop the following courses late and waive the Requirement to Withdraw for One year:
CISC 102, ECON 112, PHIL 151 (W 2021)
MATH 121 (S 2021)
CISC 124, CISC 203 (F 2021)
Please note that I am not dropping the Winter term 2022 courses late since you had received your diagnosis prior to Winter term 2022 and it was your responsibility to drop courses by the drop deadline if you were falling behind or struggling in those courses.
Additionally, to ensure you do not take on more courses than you are able to manage, I will limit your course enrolment to four (4) courses per term during the 2022/23 academic year. You may now resume your studies.
As part of your return to studies, I encourage you to take advantage of the many services available including SASS which have helpful resources including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Student Wellness Services also offers personal counselling free of charge to all Queen's students as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
Going forward, you will be responsible for managing the impact of your condition on your academics proactively and not after the fact via the appeal process. I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to the week 8 drop deadline and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the drop deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances.
