Dear Ellen:

I was sorry to read of the circumstances you outlined in your letter of appeal. No doubt this has been a difficult time for you and your family, and I am sorry for your loss. I will grant your appeal to drop PHIL 250, PHIL 257 (FW2021/22) and PSYC 251, BIOL 102, GLPH 171, PHIL 151 (W 2022) past the academic deadline based on the circumstance outlined.

I encourage you to reach out to our Student Wellness Services if you wish to meet with a counsellor who may be able to help you manage your grief, and if your circumstances require ongoing accommodations Ellen, you may want to register with QSAS who can help support both your health and academics by putting in place appropriate accommodations so you can meet your course work requirements.

Going forward, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to week 7 and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Yours sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
