I have carefully considered your appeal for Aegrotat Standing in PSYC 335 (W21). After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60% of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)?. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I acknowledge that you had been impacted with additional family-related responsibilities during the 2021 Winter term however your appeal letter indicates that these began at the end of the 2020 Fall term, well before the academic drop deadline for this class. As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. It is the student??s responsibility to assess their progress in their classes before the drop deadline of each term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by the deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students.
I am sympathetic to your situation however, the documentation that you supplied related to your grandfather??s medical records do not comment on how this situation impacted your academic ability to complete this course. I also see that you were able to complete other courses successfully to high standards during the 2021 Winter term. As your family-related responsibilities began before the drop deadline of the term, and your documentation didn??t demonstrate why you were not able to complete all components in PSYC 335, I cannot grant this request.
I understand that this is a disappointing decision, but due to the support that I have received from your instructor, I am willing to allow you an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in this class so that you can complete the outstanding Research Essay during the current 2022 Fall term. It is your responsibility to connect with Professor Brent to make these arrangements.
