Category: Drop a course after the academic deadline

Dear Caroline White:

I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the 21-day deadline related to your request to drop ARTH 260 and ASCX 101 after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.

The academic requirements in the Faculty of Arts and Science are clearly outlined in the Academic Regulations section of the Academic Calendar. The 21-day deadline is put in place to ensure fair decision making and provide the student with an opportunity to collect relevant information for their appeal. I want to remind you that you have submitted three Academic Appeals since the 2020 Fall term ended. While I acknowledge your explanation as to why you didn??t drop these courses during the 2020 Fall term, it is unclear why you didn??t make this appeal request sooner.

I certainly empathize with your situation and understand that this is a disappointing decision however the documentation that you supplied does not confirm any extenuating circumstances that would have impacted your ability to submit this appeal request within the 21-day deadline. Nor does it confirm a timeline of academic impact that aligns with the term that these courses were taken in.

I want you to know that repeating courses is a recommended strategy if you are concerned about a lower grade impacting your grade point average. When repeating the exact same course, both grades remain on your transcript but only the higher one is included within your cumulative GPA.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean??s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on ??Board of Studies?). You may contact the Office of the University Ombudsperson for information about student rights and responsibilities as well as guidance on policy and procedure (www.queensu.ca/ombuds).

??Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s university Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.??

Sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
