Dear Malayna:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your petition letter and understand that these were difficult circumstances to deal with. I have carefully considered your request receive Credit standing in SOCY 211 (W 2020) as well as receive extensions of Incomplete grades in SOCY 225, SOCY 352 (F 2021) and SOCY 300, SOCY 309, SOCY 310 (W 2022). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your petition to extend IN grades in SOCY 310 and SOCY 352 due to instructor support. It is your responsibility to contact both instructors to make appropriate arrangements regarding the completion of the course work.
2. To deny your request to extend the Incomplete grades in SOCY 225, SOCY 300 and SOCY 309. The instructor of those courses is no longer working at Queen??s so accepting outstanding course requirements is not possible. I am however willing to drop those courses late based on your extenuating circumstances and the documentation you have provided. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
3. To deny your request for Credit standing in SOCY 211. The input I received from the instructor notes that the grades earned is reflective of the mastery you received in this course and that changing the grade to a CR would not be representative of the learning outcomes achieved.
Going forward, I strongly suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term. If you have fallen behind in your studies due to your health or other extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Malayna, I am concerned about your heavy course workload since you will now be completing SOCY 310 and SOCY 352 as well as completing two courses from the Summer term 2022, plus you are currently in a full course load. I strongly suggest that you consider either dropping some current Fall 2022 courses (drop deadline is November 1) or accept a DR in SOCY 310 and SOCY 352 as well as SOCY 225, SOCY 300 and SOCY 309. Potential future requests for Incomplete grades in your Fall 2022 courses will not be granted based on the accumulation of course work from previous terms or the same extenuating circumstances presented in this petition.
