Dear Anita,
I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the 21-day deadline, and I also considered your requirement to withdraw for 1 year. After reviewing your appeal, I am sympathetic to the number of incidents that occurred. In addition, the new documentation submitted from your doctor was compelling. This practitioner attests that the condition which has impacted your academic performance in the past is being managed such that the anticipated academic impact going forward will be minimal. For these reasons I am compelled to waive the 21-day deadline and your requirement to withdraw and allow you to return to studies as of January 2023. In addition, I am willing to drop your winter 2022 courses.
I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances and since you have sought out help from your doctor. But I need to caution you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage ongoing problems. The Appeal process is designed for students who encounter problems, or whose problems become acute, after the drop deadline. As your doctor recommends, I would encourage you to take a lighter course load in winter 2023 and evaluate the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term. If you have fallen behind or you are not performing in courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the drop deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Your progression will be assessed again after you have attempted another 18 units. I urge you to take advantage of the resources above and that your grades are stronger to avoid a requirement to withdraw for 3 years.
