I have carefully considered your petition to take more than 6.0 units on an International Letter of Permission during the 2023 Winter term. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student??s control and debilitating to their academic performance. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I acknowledge that you hope to begin a graduate school program in the Fall of 2023 and that you still require 12.0 units of electives in addition to the 6.0 units of electives that you took on an International of Permission in the Fall term and your currently enrolled Queen??s courses. I certainly empathize with your situation and understand that this is a disappointing decision however taking 30.0 units in one term is not reasonable especially when the Faculty of Arts and Science offers three Summer term sessions (May ?? June, May ?? July and July ?? August) that you can take your final electives in.
I see that you are currently enrolled in 18.0 units of Queen??s courses for the 2023 Winter term and want to remind you that 18.0 units in one term is a heavy course load. Choosing to take more than the recommended number of classes does not constitute sufficient grounds to appeal to retroactively drop a class after the academic deadline.
