Dear Phoenix:

I am sorry to have read in your petition letter of the loss of your father previously. I am sure that has been difficult for you and your family. I have carefully considered your request to drop ENIN 140 (F 2021) past the academic deadline and I can see on your transcript that you did drop your Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 courses and then took Winter term 2022 off. It is possible that you didn??t quite understand that you had missed the drop deadline for ENIN 140 so, based on that circumstance, I will grant your petition to drop ENIN 140.

I have also considered your request to drop EMPR 100 (F 2022) and acknowledge that your circumstances may continue to impact you Pheonix so will grant this late drop as well. This however is a lenient decision since the petition process is not meant to help a student manage ongoing challenges. Instead, I would strongly encourage you to reach out to Student Wellness Services who can help you manage the lingering impact of your grief.

Going forward, you will be responsible for managing the impact of your challenges on your academics proactively and not after the fact via the petition process. I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to the week 8 drop deadline and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the drop deadline.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
