Dear Zaina Chowdhury:
I have carefully considered your petition to add ECON 232 (W23) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student??s control and debilitating to their academic performance.
Your petition did not suggest that an extenuating circumstance prevented you from being able to add this course by the January 20 add deadline and I see that you were able to enroll in other classes before that date. I also regret to inform you that the instructor of ECON 232 does not support that a student be enrolled in this class after missing the first three weeks of lectures.
I acknowledge that you plan to pursue an Honours plan in the future however, I want to remind you that you are currently on probation. As you know, your academic standing will be assessed in May of 2023 and I am concerned that enrolling in an additional course would not be beneficial to you at this time. I have denied this request due to your current academic standing and the recent failure that I see from your Fall term records.
I understand that this is a disappointing decision however, I encourage you to meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss your current academic standing and create an academic plan to help you reach your goals. You can book this appointment through the Faculty of Arts and Science website at https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/student-services/advising. I also want to remind you of the support services that you can access through Queen??s while you complete your currently enrolled Winter term class:
