I have carefully considered your petition to add GNDS 125 (W23) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision.
I acknowledge that you are exploring a variety of subjects during your first year at Queen??s however, your petition did not suggest that an extenuating circumstance prevented you from being able to add this course by the January 20 add deadline, and I see that you were able to enroll in other classes before that date. I want to let you know that your academic standing will be assessed in May of 2023. Your current cumulative GPA is a 1.0 based on your 2022 Fall term classes and you will need to raise this to minimum of a 1.6 during the 2023 Winter term to avoid being put on probation. Adding GNDS 125 this late in the term is not essential and I would even suggest that you consider reducing your course load further so that you can focus on succeeding in the courses that you enjoy. I recognize that your health has been affected by COGS 100 and I support your decision to drop this course.
I understand that this is a disappointing decision however, I encourage you to meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss your current academic standing and create an academic plan to help you reach your goals.
