Dear Aidan:
I have carefully considered your petition asking to drop PSYC 236 (W 2023) past the academic deadline, and after reviewing your letter and documentation, I have decided to grant your request.
I have exercised some leniency in this decision, acknowledging the circumstance you outlined, but normally taking 6 courses is not considered grounds for a petition. Additionally, your documentation does not provide me with information related to the severity and impact your circumstances had on your studies. However, the documentation does offer proof that you did have health related challenges which extended past the March 3 drop deadline. If there are additional petitions submitted in the future, carrying 6 courses would not be sufficient grounds to drop a course late, and documentation would need to include information related to the timeline, severity and impact that the extenuating circumstances had on your studies.
Going forward, I recommend that you pause and evaluate your health and progress in your courses during week 7 of each term, and if you have fallen behind or your health is impacting your studies, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding.
