Dear Mateo:

I am sorry to read in your petition letter that you have encountered health related challenges during the Fall term and I have carefully considered your request to drop HLTH 101 and ECON 111 (F 2022) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your petition, I have decided to grant your request.

I have exercised some leniency in this decision, acknowledging the challenges you outlined and since you are a first-year student, but your documentation was not specifically related to Fall term 2022 and these courses in particular, nor did it indicate how your circumstances impacted your studies during Fall term. However, I can see that you have been diagnosed with a health-related circumstance and am pleased that you report your condition is currently being managed and that you are now registered with QSAS.

Going forward, I recommend that you pause and evaluate your health and progress in your courses during week 7 of each term, and if you have fallen behind or your health is impacting your studies, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's. The petition process is not designed to manage an ongoing condition.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding.
