Dear Benjamin:
I am sorry to have read of the challenges you reported in your petition letter and I have carefully considered your request to receive Aegrotat Standing in ECON 231 and ECON 332 (F 2022) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60% of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)?. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student??s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied.
Benjamin, you have been unable to explain why you were able to enrol in Winter term 2023 courses but not complete these two economics courses. Additionally, you have been unable to provide documentation which supports extenuating circumstances during Winter term. I am happy to let you know that the instructor has advised our office that he is willing to let you complete the outstanding requirements and I urge you to discuss that option with Professor Keay directly in spite of the competing demands with your summer job that you mention.
Going forward, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to the drop deadline and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the course to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the drop deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s university Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
