Dear Anshul:
On May 19, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request to receive Credit Standing CISC 271 (Winter 2022) and an Extension of Incomplete for CISC 497 (Winter 2022). Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant (Faculty member), Devon Lin (Faculty member), and Therese de Rivera (Student representative). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting along with the Associate Dean (Academic), Jenn Stephenson. Your counsellor from Student Wellness Services, Roger Davidson (support person), and Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) were also present.
After you, your support person and Dr. Stephenson left the meeting, the Board thoroughly considered the information from the oral statements along with all written submissions contained in the file. At this meeting and after careful thought and deliberation, we voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your request to receive Credit Standing CISC 271 (Winter 2022) and an Extension of Incomplete for CISC 497 (Winter 2022), finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and your academic record.
The Board recognizes the severity of your health-related and we truly sympathize with your situation. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that significant accommodation was given in CISC 271 through universal design for your test and through an unusual extension for an assignment. The Board appreciates the fact that the grade you earned was disappointing to you, but we agree with the Associate Dean that it accurately reflects your academic performance in the course. Regarding CISC 497, we also concur with the Associate Dean that there was too much work outstanding to warrant an Incomplete, as this notation is normally reserved for courses where there are only one or two elements of the course work to be completed. The Board would also like to point out that students are advised to monitor their progress in a course and drop a course before the academic deadline, which is at the end of week 8 for a term course.
We recognize the importance of this decision to you and want to assure you that we explored all aspects of your appeal through discussion of your file.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision. Please also note that Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s University Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
