Dear Brendan:

I am sorry to have read the extenuating circumstances outlined in your petition letter, and I have carefully considered your request to drop POLS 241, POLS 262, POLS 285 and GPHY 250 (W 2023) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request. Since you passed POLS 212 (W 2023) you cannot request to drop that course since you have a passing grade in it, but instead, I will grant you credit standing. That means the current D grade in POLS 212 will be changed to a CR on your transcript, thus giving you credit for the course, but the grade will not impact your GPA.

I have granted this petition based on your circumstances, and the documentation provided which notes that you are being treated for a medical condition that has impacted your functioning in general. I strongly encourage you continue to work with your health care team including your QSAS Advisor, and to proactively manage the impact of your condition on your academics.

Going forward, you will be responsible for managing the impact of your condition on your academics proactively and not after the fact via the petition process. I suggest that you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses during week 7 of the term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances.
