I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your petition letter, I have carefully considered your request to waive the petition deadline related to courses from the 2021 Fall and 2022 Winter terms. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to waive the petition deadline related to courses from the 2022. You may now proceed with a subsequent petition request to drop BCHM 218, PHGY 216 and STAT 263 (W22) after the academic deadline and for credit standing in LLCU 213. Please know that a student may only be eligible for Credit Standing in a course if they had completed all of the components and had met the learning outcomes in it. Within this petition request, your letter must explain why you didn’t drop these courses by the Winter term drop deadline. Your documentation should clearly confirm the timeline that your extenuating circumstances began as well as the date that you first sought professional supports from your health care provider.
To deny your request to waive the petition deadline related to courses from the 2021 Fall term. As you know, the Faculty of Arts and Science academic requirements are clearly outlined in the Academic Calendar. The 15-business day petition deadline is put in place to ensure fair decision making and provide the student with an opportunity to collect relevant information and documentation for their request.
I acknowledge that the documentation you supplied suggests that your extenuating circumstances had impacted your academics for the past 2 years however, I want to remind you of your prior petition request to drop a 2021 Fall term course from December of 2021. I also see that you submitted a petition request asking to add a course after the academic deadline in January of 2022. As it is clear that you were able to make academic decisions related to your courses during the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, I cannot waive this petition deadline. It is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
