I am sorry to have read of the circumstances outlined in your petition and I have carefully considered your request to drop CLST 306, CLST 314 (W 2023); ENGL 360, ENGL 357, ENGL 389 (FW 2022/23); RELS 131, PHIL 151, MUSC 171, HIST 252, ENGL 237 (S 2023) after the drop deadline as well as receive Credit standing in CLST 311, CLST 340 (F 2022). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1. To grant your request to drop CLST 306, CLST 315 (W 2023) and ENGL 360, ENGL 357, ENGL 389 (FW 2022/23) based on your grandmother’s passing in April, and I am very sorry for your loss.
2. To deny your request to drop RELS 131, PHIL 151, MUSC 171, HIST 252, ENGL 237 (S 2023). You should not have enrolled in these courses due to your previous circumstances.
3. To deny your request for Credit standing in CLST 311 and CLST 340 (F 2022) since the diagnosis of your circumstances was prior to the drop deadline and you had lots of time to make academic decisions and to seek support.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, "Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course and demonstrated that the learning outcomes were achieved, but because of illness or other documented extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.”
Going forward, let me remind you that it is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes prior to the drop deadlines and if they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by the deadline. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students. I am very concerned about the heavy course load you have during both the Fall and Winter terms this year, and strongly suggest that you adhere to the advice above since petitioning to drop courses late after this strong warning would not be viewed favorably.
Another tool to manage your academics is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:
