Dear Princess:
I am sorry to have read of the circumstances outlined in your petition and I have carefully considered your request to drop PHAR 100, PSYC 251 (F 2022); PSYC 221, PSYC 325 (W 2023) after the drop deadline as well as receive Credit standing in CISC 204 (F 2022) and CISC 204, PSYC 241 (W 2023) [Please note you cannot request to drop courses that you passed which is why your petition was amended to request CRedit standing in these courses.] After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1. To grant your request to drop PHAR 100, PSYC 251 (F 2022) based on your health related circumstances that began in the Fall term 2022.
2. To deny your request to drop PSYC 221 and PSYC 325 (W 2023) since your circumstances began during Fall term, you should not have enrolled in these courses due to your previous circumstances or paused and reflected on the impact those circumstances were having on your prior to the drop deadlines.
3. To deny your request for Credit standing in CISC 204 (F 2022) since the instructor in this course advised that the learning outcomes were not achieved and that the grade earned represents the outcomes achieved.
4. To deny your request for Credit standing in CISC 204 and PSYC 241 (W 2023) since your circumstances began during Fall term and you should not have enrolled in these courses due to your previous circumstances, or at least have paused and reflected on the impact those circumstances were having on your studies prior to the drop deadlines and dropped these courses by that deadline.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, "Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course and demonstrated that the learning outcomes were achieved, but because of illness or other documented extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.”
Going forward, let me remind you that it is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term, and if they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by the week 8 deadline. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
Another tool to manage your academics is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:
