Dear Jessica:

I was sorry to read of the difficulties you outlined in your petition letter, and I have carefully considered your request to drop STAT 263 and DEVS 250 (W 2023) after the academic deadline as well as extend your Incomplete grade in ENSC 230 (W 2023). After reviewing this petition, I have decided to grant this request based on your circumstances, documentation, and the input received from your instructor. The deadline to submit your outstanding requirements in ENSC 230 is December 31, 2023 although Professor Hall advised that you plan to complete the final assessment deliverable by the end of October, 2023 and I encourage you to meet that deadline.

Going forward, you should pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term and drop courses that you are behind in, or not achieving the grades you desire, by the week 8 drop date deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's. The petition process is not designed to manage ongoing circumstances.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Jessica, I strongly encourage you continue to work with a health professional should you experience a flare up of your condition and to proactively manage the impact of your condition on your academics. If you have not yet registered with QSAS, I encourage you to discuss this option with your health professional since a QSAS Advisor can help put into place appropriate accommodations to help you manage the impact of your challenges on your academics. 

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
